The original purpose of this blog was to record my own thoughts and feelings evoked by events that I encountered during fieldwork in Japan. Now I write on my life in the U.S. as a kind of fieldwork.
There are some preschoolers who try to cling to me. Today one 4-year-old girl was particularly tenacious. She kept clinging to my body by calling me "Daddy! Daddy!" even when her kindergarten teacher told her to go back to her seat. I wondered whether her father spent enough time with her.

I am a doctoral student in sociology. From May 2005 through March 2006 I conducted fieldwork in Japan.
